Thanks, Sacanime

Thanks to the lovely staff at Sacanime for another great con experience.

As I had several people take cards and ask about custom work, let me give you a quick overview about what's available.

Custom Books

I've just received a large shipment of Italian text blocks in sizes from 100x68 mm to 300x250mm. These are the machine sewn blocks of similar size that have lines, grids, or blank pages. I'm still in the process of sorting through them all and will be casing them in over the next few months. If you would like to order a custom cloth and paper combination, there is no additional charge to work from my existing stock. Take a look at the galleries to get an idea what's available. These books are priced between $15.00 and $50.00 depending on size. Absent a particular request that they be configured otherwise, they're quarter bound in cloth with paper on the rest of the covers. Cloth corners can be added and leather is available upon request. In most cases, they would be available in about two weeks (possibly longer, which we would discuss at the time you place the order).

Custom Sketch Books

I have a standard sketchbook structure that I will be making more of in anticipation of the Spring con season. The next batch will be somewhat different than the last and will be available in a variety of paper types (I am actively looking for a good calligraphy paper to bind in a sketchbook and plan to do a watercolor version as well). Depending on the paper quality, these books generally run between $30.00 and $40.00 (a more costly paper would obviously raise that) and would take about 4 weeks to complete.

Commissioning a Book

If what you want is not part of my usual œuvre, please contact me about a commissioned book. Please be aware of the following:

  • Generally, custom work will start at $100.00 and go up from there (way up if leather or vellum is involved).
  • A minimum of 8 weeks will be required. I am unable to accommodate requests for rush orders.
  • When a final written description of the book is agreed to, a non-refundable deposit of 50% will be required to commence work on the project.

Shipping charges will be determined at the time the book is complete. My preferred method of shipping is USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate. FedEx is available upon request. I do not ship through UPS. Work valued at over $50.00 will also be insured at the carrier's rate for the full value.

Thank you for stopping by, and let me know what I can make for you.

Letterpress: Cards and Broadsides

Those of you who have been by the table at the the shows in 2014 may have noticed a growing number of letterpress items. This is a line that will be expanding in 2015, and I'm anticipating putting those into a shop before spring.

For those keeping track, there are three broadsides from last year:

  • The Litany Against Fear from Dune (edition of 25)
  • Rules of Technology by Douglas Adams (edition of 42)
  • Art and Money from Iggy Pop's BBC 6 John Peel speech (edition of 25)

Each is a multicolor letterpress print from hand-set metal and mood type. There are an additional 4 copies on a different style paper. At least two are expected in 2015.

I've begun making letterpress cards as well. These are available locally in San Francisco and will also land in the shop.

Clockwork Alchemy 2014

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, especially my many returning customers. It was lovely to see you.

If you asked about a custom order, please visit the contact page to drop a note about what you're looking for. You can also see available papers on the Paper page above.

I'm very excited to be returning to Clockwork Alchemy again this year. I'll have several new book structures available, including a very inexpensive pocket journal.

If you're inclined to hear me ramble about books, please come to either the lecture on book structures and changes in 19th century binding on Saturday, May 24 at 11:00AM or to the case binding workshop on Sunday evening from 7:00-10:00PM. Participation in the workshop requires a commitment to the full three hours, and the kit is $40.00. The kit contains all the materials to make a small (about 4"x3") case bound book with two classic short stories, a colored endpaper, and cloth and paper cover.
